It may be easier than you think! There are other ways that are considerably difficult, more for the “Photoshop expert”. You can see how other people color by Google-ing something like “tumblr gif coloring tutorial.” There are tons out there! But here’s how I do it:

First, make sure that your layers window adjustments windows are visible (Window > Layers and Window > Adjustments)
Once you have a .gif ready to go, click the adjustment layer button: the half black, half white circle at the bottom of the Layers window. The two adjustments that I play around with are the curves and the color balance. You can play around with the others, too.

Click Curves… first. It should show up like this:

I play around with the black and white triangles first (I’ve highlighted them here.) Bring the black to the right and white to the left. You’ll see how they both add in more blacks and whites in your .gif. Then, take the square on the graph there and move it upwards. I find that this fills the .gif with darks and lights.

Then, you can tweek around with the shadows, highlights, and midtones in the color balance adjustment layer. Click Color Balance… under the Adjustment button in the Layers menu. Just play around with the sliders and do what you think looks good. Sometimes, an image can appear to have more of a certain color in it… you can slide around the triangles away from a color.

Honestly, everything here is trial and error. Just approach coloring with an open mind and trust your eyes. Do what you think looks right! Treat it like an experiment!

If this tutorial is too vague for anyone, please send me a message and I will try to put together either a more elaborate tutorial or a video tutorial.
